Mercury Marine pro Korey Sprengel wins NWT Championship
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (Sept. 26, 2014) - Mercury pro angler Korey Sprengel captured the title at the Cabela's National Walleye Tournament Championship (NWT) at Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on Sept. 20. The championship is his first at NWT and his sixth career title.
Sprengel, 26, of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, took the top honor with a total weight of 43.69 pounds for the tournament. Sprengel's 18.42-pound stringer, which included four walleye between 22 and 23 inches, was the largest of the tournament.
"One of the biggest keys to my success was my engine," said Sprengel of his Mercury OptiMax 250 Pro XS. "I had to go about 15 to 20 miles to get to my area. Day three was definitely a morning bite, getting the first fish within my first five casts. That Pro XS is so quick and it's important to get the job done early. You just don't know what the afternoon will bring."
With the win, Sprengel takes home a new 621FS Ranger, $15,000 in Ranger Cup bonus money, $1,000 in Mercury contingency winnings and $1,424 in Anglers Advantage winnings. The NWT tournament was the final pro-am event of the 2014 season.
