Truex enters NASCAR playoffs kickoff at Chicagoland Speedway as No. 1 seed

Martin Truex Jr., driver of the No. 78 Toyota Camry, begins his quest for the 2017 NASCAR Championship crown in Sundays playoff opener at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois. Truex returns to the 1.5-mile tri-oval speedway as the defending champion of the Tales of the Turtles 400 and on the heels of claiming the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season Championship.

He is the number one seed in the 16-driver field for the Chase thanks to 53 bonus points earned during a regular season that included four race wins and 18 stage wins.

Chicagolands 1.5-mile track configuration plays to Truexs strengths three of the No.78s four season victories were on 1.5-mile tracksLas Vegas Motor Speedway, Kansas Speedway and Kentucky Speedway.

How the NASCAR Playoff Format Works

Sixteen drivers earned a spot in the first round of the playoffs. Point totals are reset to 2,000 plus earned playoff bonus points accumulated to-date. After three playoff races in Round 1, four drivers will be eliminated, reducing the field to 12. After three playoff races in Round 2, another four drivers will be eliminated and same for Round 3. The final four drivers will enter the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Championship 4 driver, who finishes best among the four finalists in the Homestead race, will be crowned the 2017 NASCAR champion.
